Giant Sand

Giant Sand , called in the beginning The Giant Sandworms , is a group of music étatsunien of Tucson (but Los Angeles was the den of the group a long time). Led by the omnipresent singer-lyric writer-guitarist-pianist Howe Gelb , the members of the group often changed during time and with each new album. The battery and the low one have longtemp ensured by John Convertino and Joey Burns, who ended up forming the group Calexico. With the keyboards Chris Cacavas officiated (of Green one Red), in the low Paula Jean Brown (wife of Gelb in same time), and with the battery Tom Larkins. Among the invited musicians one raises the names of Victoria Williams, Neko Case, Juliana Hatfield, PJ Harvey, Vic Chesnutt, Steve Wynn, Vicki Peterson, Rainer Ptacek, almost all the members of Poi Dog Pondering and the small contributions of the girl of Gelb and Brown, Indiosa Patsy Jean.

Just like the frequent changes of musician, the musical tonality of the albums also varies, of an electric guitar hardly scraped - with the manner of one of the models of Gelb, Neil Young - with passages being inspired almost by the metal, with the center sometimes of the same piece. One finds also flights jazz inspired by Thelonious Monk in Gelb with the piano, played with phrased the jerked characteristic one of his work.
