Gianna Beretta Molla

Gianna Beretta Molla (Magenta, October 4th 1922 - April 28th 1962) is holy a Italian. She died of one tumor to the uterus and because she refused care which would have resulted in the death of the child that she carried.

His/her parents are deeply catholic, and belong to the Third-order franciscain. It is it tenth of their thirteen children. Three are devoted to God: Enrico, doctor missionary capuchin; Giuseppe, priest in the Diocese of Bergamo; Virginia, medical nun with Canossa. His/her parents live with Milan during 18 years, and attend there the church of the fathers capuchins of the Cours Monforte. In 1925, after several of the brothers of Gianna died of the Spanish Grippe, the family settles in Bergamo.

Youth

As of its more young age, it fully adheres to the faith her parents. It makes its First communion whereas it has only five years and half, the April 4th 1928. As from this moment, it goes to the mass every morning. The June 9th 1930, it receives the Confirmation in the Cathédrale of Bergamo.

She likes the music, painting and the climbing.

In January 1937, his/her Amalia sister dies, the family settles with Quinto Al pond, a district of Genoa where the university is. There, Gianna fits in a Lycée near to the delle Istituto Suore Dorotee . At the end of the fifth, his/her parents decide to make him stop its studies during one year because of its bad health condition.

In October 1941, the family goes back to Bergamo, in the house of the maternal grandparents, because of the bombardments. It is there that Gianna, at the end of its secondary studies, loses his/her parents in four months of interval. In October 1942, it turns over to Magenta, attends the medical college and of surgery, initially in Milan, then with Padoue, where it is graduate the November 30th 1949. During all its years of university, it assists each day with the mass, communie and recites the Rosaire.

During these years, it is integrated into the life of the parish of San Martino , while being invested in the education of the young people of the delle Oratorio Madri Canossiane . Moreover, it militates with the catholic Action and takes part in the Conférences of Saint-Vincent de Paul.

Doctor

After its diploma in medicine, on July 1st 1950, Gianna opens an doctor's office with Mesero. It obtains a specialization in Pédiatrie in Milan the July 7th 1952 and turns to assisted, the poor, the mothers, the children and the elderly.

Beside its community activities, it works with the catholic Action while being devoted to young people. Its distractions are still the music, painting, the alpinism.

Family life

September 24th, 1955, she marries Pietro which she had known a few years before. In the locality of Magenta Nuovo Big shot close to , it is responsible for the antenna of consultation of the mothers and the house of reception, depend on the national Oeuvre Maternité and Childhood , at the same time as it voluntarily brings its medical assistance to the nursery school and the elementary school.

It has three children: Pierluigi (November 19th 1956), Maria Zita (Mariolina) (December 11th 1957) and Laura (July 15th 1959).

The disease

In 1961, in the second month of a new pregnancy, Gianna is reached of a Fibrome with the uterus. Before surgical operation to remove the fibrome to him, she asks the surgeon to save the fetus. A few days before the childbirth, she that if it were necessary to choose between the life of his child and his, had to be sacrificed his says.

The April 21st 1962, it gives rise to Gianna Emanuela. For Gianna long sufferings start. Despite everything the care which is lavished to him, its state worsens of day in day. She dies on April 28th, at the 39 years age. Its funeral causes a very great emotion.

Canonization

Gianna Beretta Molla was béatifiée by the pope Jean-Paul II the April 24th 1994 and canonized on May 16th, 2004.
