Gian Vittorio Baldi

Gian Vittorio Baldi is a realizer, producer and Italian scenario writer, born in 1930 with Lugo (Italy).

Biography

Gian Vittorio Baldi was formed at the experimental National center of cinematography of Rome (where the series which it devoted to the recent history of Italy a first recognition was worth him, since 1958). Gian Vittorio Baldi seems, as of his first court-measurings, the large Italian scenario writer of the word and the sound. Its synchronous, word on line which, for him, is literally what makes event; free word, certainly, but necessarily spontaneous, rather recreated, rejouée vis-a-vis the camera in a form renewed of has leaves theatrical and transformed by the relation which the scenario writer develops always upstream with those and those which are for him more presences become close documentary characters. From there is born this deep empathy which feels the spectator of way quasi-tactile at the time to enter inside these tiny lives, seized with the edge of the law, death, of the exile, in a space quietly become common where each one, filmor, filmed and spectator, can have the impression to form a unit with the film.

In addition independent producer (Chronic of Anna Magdalena Bach, Pigsty, Notes for Orestie African, Newspaper of a schizophrene, Four Nights of a dreamer and first films of Biette) and cofounder of transitory International of the Scenario writers Documentarists, Baldi carries out then Luciano- Una vita bruciata, then Fuoco! , feature-length films more tried by the fiction. Deliberately conceived to be unacceptable, except for a spectator of cinema - because it is with its experiment, not in its expertise, that he addresses himself -, Fuoco! (1968), account of a carnage without apparent mobile, given to see without the least explanation, puts in scene a metaphor of the capacity, a fatal madness born from a lead pétage, returning to the dead ends of a company which would have lost the reason overall. Turned in fourteen days, chronologically and, could one say, of only one feature, in 16 mm and his direct, with less technical interventions possible, Fuoco! is excessive, but its disproportion is with the measurement of its belief in the cinema. Document without concession on the revolt under consideration like energy expense and pure flashover of the bodies, it puts initially concerned a body of cinema, heated with white by the connections, recalled to the order by the movements of camera, methodical, insistent, obsessional in their repetition. By doing this, it is also the spectator whom it puts in scene, hustled in his practices, reached personally, documented on his own tolerance level to the images, constrained to think so that to look at means. Because, as opposed to what one in vain tries to make us believe, to look at engages. “I would like to help the cinema in his anguish, I would like to accelerate it: it seems to me that there is not anything else to make to continue to have ideals, to start again with all to rebuild as soon as possible”, wrote Baldi in 1967, in Rinascita. The cinematographic continuation of this project is not known to me and will discover we it together in Lussas, a handle of films remained invisible in France, of which Nevrijeme it Temporal and Zen, which Adriano Apra, old directing of the Cineclub of Rome, affirms to me being still better, or worse, according to the points of view and the manners of seeing. One could say, like Fernand Deligny, according to the points to see.
