Gian Carlo Menotti
Gian Carlo Menotti (July 7th 1911 with Cadegliano-Viconago, Italy - 2007 with Monte Carlo, Monaco), was a Compositeur and a American Librettiste of Italian origin. He wrote in particular the opera Amahl and the Night Visitors. It was also at the origin of the creation of It Festival dei Due Mondi ( Festival of the two worlds , in French) in 1958 and of its American equivalent Spoleto Festival the USA in 1977.
Biography
Menotti started to write its songs whereas it was only 7 years old. At 11 years already, he wrote the booklet and the music of his first opera: the death of Pierrot . However it began really its musical activity only in 1923 when it entered to the Conservatoire Made green of Milan.After the death of his/her father, Menotti and its mother came to settle with the the United States in 1928 it entered then to the Curtis Institute off Music of Philadelphia. Among the students of this institute, were also Leonard Bernstein and Samuel Barber which became later the partners of Menotti in his work. One can in particular quote most famous opera of Samuel Barber entitled Vanessa whose booklet is signed by Menotti. The first of this opera took place in 1958 with the Metropolitan Opera. Menotti was still student with the Curtis Institute off Music when it signed in Italian its first grand opera, Amelia Al Ballo ( Amelia goes to the Ball , in French). Thereafter, he wrote in Italian only two other operas the Island of God and the last Savage . The remainder of its work was written in English. Its work most important was composed in the years 1940 and 1950. Thereafter, Menotti also taught with the Curtis Institute off Music and had among its students and protected a American Compositeur from the name from.
Menotti wrote the booklets of two opera S of Samuel Barber, Vanessa and has Hand off Bridge and revisited the last - Antony and Cleopatra . Amelia of Menotti gained such a success that NBC ordered of it an audio version for the radio. The Old Maid and the Thief was the first work of great width for Menotti. It composed then of the Ballet S, Sebastian in 1944 and a concert for piano in 1945 before returning to its first love, the opera, with The Medium and the telephone .
Its first grand opera, The Consul was created in 1950: it gained the Prix Pulitzer for the Music and the New York Drama Circle Critics' Award for the musical work of the year. In 1951, Menotti wrote its dear opera of Christmas Amahl and the Night Visitors for the Hallmark Hall off Famed . In 1958, it founded the Festival of the two Worlds to Spoleto in Italy, then founded its equivalent in 1977 with the the United States.
After the sale of the residence which it divided with its partner Samuel Barber, Menotti had a long relation with Thomas Schippers who died in 1977, Samuel Barber died in 1981. In 1984, Menotti accepted the Kennedy Center Honor for the whole of its career and, in 1991, was selected as Musicien of the year by Musical America .
Its influence also extended beyond the kingdom from the classical music, so much so that the pop star, disc of platinum, Laura Branigan ( Gloria , How Am I Supposed To Live Without You ) asked him to become its personal vocal coach for several of its albums of the years 1980 and 1990.
Gian Carlo Menotti died on February 1st, 2007, in Monte Carlo.
