Giacomo Durazzo

The count Giacomo Durazzo is a Diplomate and man of Théâtre Italy N born with Genoa the April 27th 1717 and died in Venice the October 15th 1794.

Extraordinary envoy of the Republic of Genoa to Vienna in 1749, Durazzo enters the graces of the empress Marie-Therese. Wearied diplomatic career, it is named managing director of the spectacles ( Generalspektakeldirektor ) of Vienna in 1754 and proceeds to a complete reform of the imperial theaters.

It introduces the Op3era Comique in Vienna, maintains the permanent exchanges with Favart with Paris and makes come Gluck to the court. True intendant of the spectacles, it also reforms the Ballet S and offers to Gasparo Angiolini the occasion to develop his innovative theories on the Ballet of action.

In front of the cabal organized by the detractors of its reforms, Durazzo is constrained to resign in 1764 and returns to the diplomacy, as imperial ambassador in Venice.

Its vast musical library forms today part of the Biblioteca Nazionale of Turin.
