Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex

or Kōkaku Kidōtai: Stand Alone Complex |genre= Cyberpunk |creator= Masamune Shirow }} --> Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex whose original title is Kōkaku Kidōtai: Stand Alone Complex ('攻殻機動隊 STAND ALONE COMPLEX Mobile Armoured Riot Organizes: STAND ALONE COMPLEX ) with the Japan, is often indicated simply by the acronym GitS: SAC , is a series of Japanese animation in 26 episodes. The universe of this series is the same one as that of the Manga Ghost in the Shell created by Masamune Shirow.

The production of this series TV was entrusted to the studio Production I.G and was carried out by Kenji Kamiyama. Masamune Shirow, creator original of the universe of Ghost in the Shell , provided the original idea of the series what gives an all the more strong coherence to this series with the Manga and films.

The second part of the title, Stand Alone Complex , indicates the two contradictory forces which are exerted on any individual: on the one hand, will of assertion of oneself (stand alone), on the other hand, will to be integrated in a larger unit (complex). This mechanism is described by Arthur Koestler in the horse in the engine (title English: ). The technology of the cyber-brains, facilitating connection between the individuals, increases this phenomenon.

This title is also used for to differentiate two types of episodes. The qualified episodes of Stand Alone can be visualized independently. The qualified episodes of Complex correspond to the intrigue of the Laugher and are followed. The type of each episode is indicated by a stamp appearing at the same time as the title of the episode: “Stand alone episode has” or “Complex”.

A series of courts animate was also realized in parallel of the series, Ghost in the Shell: Tachikoma Days , and are associated with each episode which puts in scene the Tachikoma. These episodes develop some points of the scenario of the episodes which they accompany.

Whereas the first season diffused in 2003 was supervised by Mamoru Oshii and Co-was written by many scenario writers whose Oshii, the second season entitled Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. 2nd GIG , diffused initially in Japan as of January 2004, must more with the print of its realizer Kenji Kamiyama what makes it rather different.

The less philosophical and more violent screen of this second season is clarified by the realizer who expresses the idea than the world changed with the attacks of the September 11th, 2001. Its reflections on the state of the world, discussed with Mamoru Oshii, brought it to a darker vision of the series and XXIe century.

The bloodier scenes reflect the evolution of the topicality since 2001 and the idea that the topic of " the guerre" could not be been unaware of.

Kenji Kamiyama is also at the origin of the term " Stand Alone Complex" in the middle of the series.

September 1st 2006, a OAV acting as third part was diffused in Japan: Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. Solid State Society . The action proceeds 2 years after the end of the preceding season and sees Section 9 with the catches with powerful a hacker.

In France the series is distributed by Beez Entertainment. The first season was diffused for the first time on MCA in January 2005, and the second season on Europe 2 TV in October 2006.

History

It is one time when all the consciences were converts in photons and electrons in a single complex

Seuls the individuals independent of the system do not have not converted

The series proceeds in 2030 in a fictitious city of Japan " Niihama-shi" (新浜市 City of the New Port). She tells the history of a brigade of called special intervention Section 9 of Public safety (公安九課), or more simply the " Section 9" (九課). GitS: SAC puts in scene the exploits of the agents of Section 9, which result from the army (Batô) or of the police force (Togusa), and the way in which the events affect them whereas they try to solve each case, which will end up leading them to the mysterious character called The Laughing Man ( the Laugher ) by the media.

Section 9 of Public safety is a unit of elite of internal security charged to warn the criminal acts and terrorists related to technology. Its main missions are the investigations into the important cyber-crimes (infiltration, takeover of cyber-brains; Cyber-terrorism), on the scandals which touch members of the government and also on cases of murder made by personalities. Time with other, Section 9 also ensures the protection of foreign dignitaries.

The characters of the series are the same ones as those of the Manga, however the history in is different (if one refers to the final scene of the second season which strongly resembles the scene of opening of the manga, one can deduce from it that the history of the animated series proceeds before the manga). In the series, Major Motoko Kusanagi (草薙素子 Kusanagi Motoko ), did not meet yet intelligent form of life born from the network called Marionnettiste (人形使い Puppet Master), or Projet 2501. This meeting is described in the first film Ghost in the Shell carried out by Mamoru Oshii.

The series is enamelled many literary references, Of the Flowers for Algernon and especially the Catch-Hearts of J.D. Salinger. The fact that the business of the Laugher is composed of many imitateurs is a reference to the theory Mémétique besides (one of the episodes of season 1 is entitled in English Even).

Comparison series TV/film

The series TV differs from the film adaptation in that which it articulates its matter primarily around situations created by technological advances. Rather than to concentrate on an intensive and personal examination of technology, the series depicts a broader version of the company and technology. The 26 episodes of 25mn are divided into two categories: 13 episodes with independent surveys (green screen) and 13 episodes with a long intrigue (blue screen), take time to explore the concepts and ideas of the original manga.

In comparison with film, the series TV is often regarded as easier to include/understand. Series is also more close to manga thanks to humor omnipresent, presence of tachikoma (predecessors of Fuchikomas of the manga which appears at the end of the 26e episode of season 2), the design of the characters and also the presence of the characters like Paz, Borma and Saïto (although mentioned in film, Saïto does not appear there).

Stand Alone Complex is a demonstration of all the experiment and the expertise on the studio Production I.G in the numerical creation of imagery (cgi). The numerical color application, the special effects and animations of the tachikoma in concealment-shading are the most remarkable aspects.

2nd GIG

Whereas in the first season the principal intrigue turns around the " rieur" , the second draft of the problem of the presence of the refugees installed has Dejima, because much of Japanese do not want any more that their government of their provides of financial aid, while others uses this conflict to arrive at their ends.

Technology

Stand Alone Complex tries during the 26 episodes to describe a credible future by the projection of current trends. One often wonders during the series which will be the companies (current or future) able to produce of such technologies and machines.

Of all futuristic technologies of the series, the cyber-brain or technologies of neurological improvement per computer is most present and convincing. It is primarily about the powerful computer installation of directly in the Cerveau, thus making it possible to increase strongly certain mental capacities like the memory. Coupled to an instantaneous access to the information network, this technology is described like fundamental and completely integrated in future the Japanese company. The communications without wire started simply by the thought, the gigantic mémorielles capacities of indexing as well as the digitalization and encoding of the mediae written on a simple glance are some of the applications derived from this technology. The studio gave an special attention to the creation of credible and comprehensible man-machine interfaces to put in scene of such technologies. The dangers and defects of these technologies are also described through the Syndrome of Closed Shell or the Autisme of the cyber-brains. (Complex of insulation)

Ghost in the Shell and Salinger

Like known as previously, Ghost in the Shell: Stand alone Complex is full with reference sà Salinger, in particular with its novel the Catch-Hearts . Thus, the Catch-Hearts is the preferred book of the Rieur (the laughing man) which registered several quotations of the book in its environment (glove of baseball, carries) like on its own personality: its logo ( I thought I' D Be one off those death-transfer. ) the intrigue " Complex" of Ghost in the Shell thus turns strongly around the novel of Salinger. But it is not all, at the time of episode 12: the absconders there are many references to the complete work of Salinger. The history which Miki with Tachikoma concerning the little girl and her red fish tells is a direct reference to Salinger since indeed, D.B the brother of Holden Caufield, main character of the Catch-Hearts , is judicious to have written a similar news whose Holden speaks to us with the whole beginning about the novel. Lastly, always in the same episode, in the cinema the posters bear the name of Go see Bananafish . However this title is a direct reference with the news One Day dreamed for the fish-banana (original title: Go see Bananafish ), first news of the receuil of the New of Salinger.
