Ghorfas

The ghorfa (Arab: rear RTL غرفة) is the basic element of a Ksar which one finds with the the Maghreb. Each ksar can comprise from 1 to 6 floors of hundreds of ghorfas, on average 200. Ksar Ouled Soltane holds a record with 400 ghorfas.

The ghorfas are arched cells having the shape of a closed half-cylinder on the side external of the ksar and provided with a door opening on the court. Unless belonging to the same tribe, two ghorfas close does not communicate, and sometimes spaces it arranged between them allows to dissimulate the products of value.

A ghorfa is a kind of attic being used to store food products, cereals in the low part, of olives and cheeses in the high part. Ventilation is ensured by 2 holes in the walls outside and interior creating a draft.
