Ghetto of Venice
The Ghetto was a zone of Venice in the district (" Sestiere ") of Cannaregio. The name " Ghetto" is a deformation of Venetian the " getto" who means " fonderie" , the district having been built on the place of an old foundry. The residence in this district was imposed and reserved for the Juif S under the République of Venice. It was successively increased, adding to the Vecchio Ghetto of the origins the Novo Ghetto then the Novissimo Ghetto. It is in this district that one meets buildings among highest of the city. Indeed, because of impossibility of building new dwellings within these limited and closed districts, the dwellings extended vertically.
The Ghetto, after having been one of the most modest districts of Venice, is rehabilitated since ten years.
The generic word “Ghetto” is derived from its name.
