History of the ghetto

  • In 1555, the Pope Paul IV with the bubble Cum nimis absurdum , revokes all the rights conceded with the Juifs and orders the creation of the ghetto.

  • the Pope Sixte V revokes some restrictions and authorizes an extension of the Ghetto on 3 hectares.
  • Under the Pope Leon XII, the ghetto is increased.
  • After an initial dismantling in 1846, the Pope Pie IX obliges the Jews to return to the Ghetto until its final abolition in 1870. The Grande synagog of Rome was then built starting from 1901 with the site of the old synagog of the ghetto and dominates the district of the ghetto.
