Ghent (in Dutch Race ) is a common city and Dutch-speaking of Belgium located in Flemish Région, chief town of the Province of Flanders-Eastern. Capital of old the County of Flanders, sometimes rival of Bruges, it is the birthplace of Charles Quint. The “Gantese” dialect is one of most typical in Belgium. It is since 1559 the seat of évêché of Ghent. It is one of the more big cities of Belgium (Communes the most populated Belgians).
Ghent knew one period of flowering, as well economic as cultural, with 14th and 15th centuries. From this time, Ghent keeps many monuments, which make this city a tourist center of very first plan.
The Viking S occupied and destroyed Ghent and its area in 851 - 852 and 879 - 883. After their departure at the end of the 9th century, the castle of the counts de Flandre was set up. The district around this castle quickly became a new core of the growing city.
As from the year 1000, Ghent was populated cities of the Spanish Netherlands (until 65 000 inhabitants). Out of the Italy there was only Paris which was populated with 100 000 inhabitants. To the 16th century, Charles Quint said “that it would put Paris in his Glove”.
The city is taken in 1678 by Vauban.
