Gewehr 71
The Mauser Gewehr 71 (Rifle 1871) became the lawful rifle of the Heer after the Guerre free-Prussian. Replacing the Rifle Dreyse, this weapon with a blow was produced in the shape of a rifle of infantry (Infantry-Gewehr 1871 or IG71) and of a rifle intended for the Hunters and the Prussian Riders. It yields its place in 1885 to Mauser Gewehr 71/84 which offers the advantage of having a tubular Magasin.
History
Gew 71 finds its origin in a prototype of Paul Mauser going back to 1865. This weapon, improved by Samuel Norris employed at Remington Arms, is manufactured into small in series in Liege and in the United States but does not find country purchasing. A new version of this Mauser-Norris is improved and barrack room for the cartridge 11x60mm R in order to take part in a new Prussian trial run.The final version is thus manufactured in the new Mauser factories of Oberndorf but also by the arsenals of Amberg, of Dantzig, Erfurt and Spandau. The military order being important Mauser sub-contracted part of the production with BSA and Österreich Waffenfabrik Gesellchaft.
