History

To 965 m of altitude, Gestiès was in the beginning, with Lercoul, a hamlet of Siguer. It will become independent as from 1793

January 18th, 1380: in the castle of Mazères, homage paid to Gaston Fébus by “lo noble Arnaut de Marquefave, senher of Montfaucon, donzel, per los locx of Boguer (Siguer), Gestures (Gestiès), Montoliu (Montoulieu), Senhaas (seignaux), in Savartes…”

At the time of the enumeration of 1390, “Gestiers” includes/understands 34 fires (what is important for the time). We find there 3 vassal of the abbot of Foix, 2 of the castle of Varilhes, 1 of Ramon de Miglos, 1 of Pons de Villemur (of Saint-Paul de Jarrat), 1 of Guilhem Ysarn…: what proves that Gestiès was a coveted place…

Ressortissait of the châtellenie of Quié in 1450; and the religious community was an appendix of Siguer (but its church, the Saint Nicolas's Day vault had)

In 1896, Gestiès comprised 90 houses, 90 households for 421 inhabitants; the industrial activity was then turned towards the slate Quarries of Garrabeille, whereas two teachers exerted there.

As regards the monk, Gestiès depends on the deanery of High Ariège and the parochial sector of Tarascon including/understanding: Alliat, Arignac, Arnave, Banat, Bompas, Capoulet, Cazenave, Génat, Gestiès, Gourbit, Illier and Lamarade, Lapège, Lercoul, Mercus-Amplaing, Miglos-Norgeat, Niaux, Ornolac-Ussat, Quié, Fold back the three lords, Siguer, Surba, Vicdessos (Auzat, Goulier, Orus, Sem, Suc and Sentenac)

Since the whole beginning of our era, the valley of Siguer was probably inhabited by the man. Under the old mode, the villages of Lercoul and Gesties were hamlets of Siguer. During the creation of the department of Ariège in 1793, these two villages were found independent causing certain problems in particular for the division of the pasturages of the mountain. The North-South orientation of the valley was used as axis of division. This village knew a primarily agricultural and pastoral activity even if a proportion of the families drew their trading income from slate. The knowledge to make cheeses containing ewe's milk had famous some. The valley of Siguer was re-elected until in the years 1947 for the exploitation of the salte quarries. The small Saint Nicolas's Day vault which are on the left before arrival at the village and of which the partly collapsed walls were raised and the roof were entirely remade out of slate in 1990.
