Geography

History

Gestel comes from Breton “the Guestel” or “Guerved” (lodging of the stags). Gestel belonged originally to Quéven. The parishes of Quéven (Quetguen in 1387) and of Bihoué (Bevoy in 1387) formerly formed part of the primitive parish of Ploemeur.

With the Middle Ages, a monastery located at the Moustoiric locality is a dependence of the abbey of Saint-Maurice de Carnoët. In 1387, Gestel is linked in Bévoy (Bihoué) to form a single parish. The parish of Gestel would have been plain with that of Lesbin in the current of the 15th century.

At the 17th century, Gestel always depends on the old parish of Lesbin with Bridge-Scorff and this until the Révolution. Gestel is set up in commune in 1790 and parish the January 26th 1820.

One finds names following: Jestel (in 1387), Estel (in 1440) and Iestell or Yestell.
