Biography

He had only one bookstore of no importance, when in 1838, to make failure with the editors of Brussels, he had the happy idea to introduce in France a new format in 18, qu ' he called it in-18 English, and which was quickly naturalized under the name of format Charpentier . The tight text made it possible to reduce the size and the cost of the book. The Œuvres of André Chénier inaugurated with a complete success this elegant, convenient collection and, for the time, of a reduced price, which was baptized the Bibliothèque Carpenter . Wishing to constitute a whole of “traditional modern”, it supported the Romantique S, then the authors representing the liberal current republican. In a few years, this collection counted nearly 400 titles.

Concretizing its reputation of “worse character of Paris”, not sparing neither the booksellers, nor the authors, it published under his own name a certain number of Notes and Mémoires relative either to lawsuits supported by him against of the literary men or against fellow-members (business Barba and Dumas, 1834; businesses Benjamin Laroche, 1845; Theophilus Lavallée, 1846; etc), is with companies of bookstores and publicity. It founded the national and foreign Revue , where collaborated Henri Brisson, Edouard Laboulaye, Pierre Lanfrey, Eugene Despois, etc

With his death, his/her Georges son took again the publisher. He became, inter alia, the appointed editor of Emile Zola, the Goncourt, Flaubert, Daudet, etc In 1896, he yielded his publisher to Eugene Fasquelle. In 1959, the Fasquelle editions and Bernard Grasset amalgamated under the name Éditions Grasset .
