Gerontius

Gerontius is a Roman General of Breton origin. Regarded as brave man, qualified, proud and ambitious, it is in favor of Constantin III, it carried out troops since the Brittany to make raise the seat of Valence by Sarus to the autumn 407. It continued this one until the the Alps but Sarus escaped to him. Consequently, it had to direct the defense of the passage of the the Pyrenees with its troops come from the Gaules in spite of the recriminations of the legions of Ibérie which wished that this guard was entrusted to them according to their habit, and not with a foreigner (winter 407).

But in 408, the return of Constant with a new general scandalized it and it decided to revolt against Constantin III. Having tied excellent relationship with the barbarians occupying Aquitaine, it then enabled them to pass beyond the Pyrenees in order to block the troops of Constant in Ibérie. He proclaimed emperor with Tarragone the usurper Maxime in 409. He passed then to the north of the Pyrenees with an army partly made up of barbarians having invaded the Spain in order to finish some with Constantin III. He besieged Vienna in 411, seized Constant which took refuge there and decapitated it. But this same year, he learned the inappropriate arrival from the troops of the Patrice Constance, general of Honorius, come from Italy to bring back Gaulle to Rome. Its troops were relaxed and it had to flee in Spain. Betrayed by its faithful last, it was defended like a lion with his wife and a servant Alain. He perishes into 411.
