Gerhard Lamprecht

Gerhard Lamprecht (* October 6th 1897 with Berlin; † May 4th 1974 with Berlin) was a director, scenario writer and historian of the cinema of German nationality.

Enfant Gerhard Lamprecht was interested already in the cinema. He studied the setting in scene and the history of art in Berlin. In 1917, it is employed as author at the cinematographic company Oskar-Messter.

Three years later, it carries out its first film. Known Lamprecht success with settings in scenes of literary works; in 1923 with a adptation of the Buddenbrooks of Thomas Mann and Emile and the detectives of Erich Kästner (1931, scenario: Billy Wilder), which was an international success. it was also interested in the living conditions of poorest and, in the middle of the years 1920, carried out a social trilogy, also noticed abroad ( Die Verrufenen in 1925, Die Unehelichen in 1926 and Menschen untereinander in 1926).

Among his films after 1933, one can note Mrs Bovary (1937) according to the novel of Gustave Flaubert with Pola Negri and Ferdinand Marian. Its film Irgendwo in Berlin (1946) was one of the first achievements of the DEFA post-war period.

Gerhard Lamprecht collected all that was in connection with the cinema. Its very rich collection was dealt with in 1962 by the Sénat of Berlin and forms the base of the German Cineclub, that Lamprecht directed until 1966. In 1967 it obtained the price of German film for the whole of its work.
