Gerard de Suresnes

Gerard Cousin (June 17th 1961 - May 10th 2005) alias Gerard of Suresnes, was a radio presenter on Fun Radio between 1996 and 2002. It had started as a regular speaker whereas it called since a phone box, before the station, interested party, finally propose to him to become stimulating. Its emission " DEBATEs of Gérard" was particularly appreciated by many listeners mainly for his quasi absence of censure (qualified resignation more trash of the band FM , reserved for a public informed ) and its shifted spirit; the organizer indeed seemed to be unaware of the spirit of derision of setting at the time of the debates and the mockery which prevailed in its opposition. The former truck driver being regarded as the prototype of the Beauf and the proletarian what made it possible to the participants of the emission to build their comic interventions on this fact, like on certain details of the private life and close friend of Gerard.

DEBATEs of Gerard

the Débats of Gerard was a radio program diffused on Fun Radio between 1996 and 2002. During season 1997/1998, the emission was diffused every Thursday between 1:00 and 4:00 of the morning, and comprised 2 debates per emission. The following season (1998/1999), the two debates were diffused 0:30 with 3:00 of the morning, each Thursday evening. The years according to, the emissions were spaced in time (approximately a month) and comprised one debate. There were on the whole approximately 200 debates.

Even if officially the emission were animated by Gerard de Suresnes, its unfolding were ensured by the team of max and the Star system (which animated already the emission of free daily antenna in premium time on Fun Radio), as by intervening listeners who became very quickly " habituels" and of the radiophonic semi-celebrities: Tony, Goldo, Arnet, Mégane, Arnold (Mr Masure), Luigi, Caramel… It often happened that proper members of the Dream Tise (the team of realization, production, standard, composed most of the time of Phildar, Manu and Reego, with dimensions whose various operators followed one another; most known being Appoline and Anneka) forsake their station to take part in the debates since the buildings of the station.

Although their voice is hardly dissimulated, in the majority of the cases, Gerard was in the impossiblity to uncover them, which gave place to great moments of radiophonic humor. Moreover, high character colors and strong temperament, the organizer was often irritated against sabotage by his engineering team and the remarks by the speakers to the debates.

The so much appreciated environment of the debates often surging and chahuteuse, but was always registered in the register of derision except Gerard. Among the celebrities having participity with the debates, sometimes even present in the studios, most memorable are Jean-Luc Delarue (being made pass for its own double!), Florian Gazan (stimulating radio operator and TV), Fred (of Omar & Fred), Cyril Hanounah (stimulating radio operator and TV), Arnold (old organizer of Fun Radio) and of course, max (radio operator organizer and TV). The topics of debate were varied, sometimes recurring (like the expensive topic of the truck drivers to the organizer) and were articulated around social phenomena (the portables, the insecurity, the Euro), of facts of topicality (the Olympic Games, the strikes, the Business Lady Di.), of the married life (the marriage, single people, the difference in age), of sexuality (pornography, obsessed, virginity), or of vague philosophical concepts (intelligence, humor, the beauty), astronomical (space, stars, the eclipse) or esoteric (astrological médiums, marabouts, signs). But certain topics of debates were completely eccentric and shifted (the vacuum cleaners, small beasts, yellow slipways) and were only one pretext with this radiophonic large-mass of Thursday evening.

Biography

Gerard Cousin was born on June 17th 1961 with Puteaux in the Hauts-de-Seine. Orphan, it grows with DDASS. He carries out his military service later (in Germany) then follows a formation and becomes truck driver. He puts himself in cohabitation and gives rise to a little girl: Roseline. Four years after his beginnings of driver, Gerard is victim of a road accident and must thereafter carry a prosthesis to the right leg, which makes it inapt to continue its trade of truck driver.

As Gerard is related more and more to drink, the mother of its daughter decides to leave it and the court refuses to him the right of access of the child. Delivered to itself, Gerard settles Cité Carnot with Suresnes (92) where he manages to live thanks to his allowances of health as to the social securities to which an applicant for work can claim.

It is by listening to the radio that he discovers the emission headlight Lovin' Fun and consequently Fun Radio. It decides to call max, free radio presenter night on Fun Radio. Since the phone box of its city, he recites poems of his composition, famous “the Poems of Gerard” to the titles as evocative as “My butterfly”, “My croûton” or “My bibi”, which touches and amuses max (as several of its conquests) which decides to invite it in the studios.

In 1996, it is seen “offering” its own free radio program in which it will be able to leave free course to its smoothness of spirit like to its overzealousnesses: the famous debates of Gerard which will become emblematic of a certain part of the French youth of the Nineties discovering the free radio. Thereafter, Gerard settles with his Sandy partner with Nanterre. This relation will give ideas to max which will create a parallel emission “the Councils of Gerard and Sandy”, supposed to bring to the listeners (famous speakers of the debates), relevant answers to their personal problems.

July 14th, 2001, Gerard and Sandy are victims of a road accident, following what the couple separates.

The October 30th 2002, during the debate on the hazing, Gerard is let carry and, undoubtedly without carrying out the import of its words, pronounces with the antenna Heil Hitler! with the amazement of the members of the engineering team. This one reprimand Gerard and the enjoint to be excused near the listeners, which it readily does in the second but to what it adds enigmatic “to the wise safety, for those which did not include/understand what that wanted to say… ”. Manu, the realizer, even cuts the emission at the moment, whereas another debate was to proceed and that the debate in progress touched at its end. The sanction is immediate and without call, the organizer definitively is évincé of Fun Radio and is driven out memory of max which will evoke never again its listener fetish with the antenna, except for a rapid homage the shortly after its death. This persistent silence, and this same after its departure of Fun Radio at the end of 2005, will be reproached the organizer much. According to Gerard, at the time of this last debate it had knocked the knee on the table of the radio, from where a bad pun: “IEA Hitler”… Moreover, a few seconds before the incident, there is a white with the antenna then one intends the team to laugh because Gerard is done badly while trying to rise his chair. Gerard was extremely puerile and was not more aware of the nature of the Nazism that impostures which made the success of the emission.

Without use nor perspective of established reconversion, Gerard decides to leave the Parisian suburbs and to settle in a HLM of Montlucon in the Allier in July 2003.

The May 10th 2005 Gerard Cousin dies out at the hospital of Montlucon, following a Cancer of the lungs diagnosed only one month before. Its skin rests today with the cemetery of Désertines in a common ground.

The memory of Gerard de Suresnes as well as the memory of the debates of Gerard are intact and remain thanks to the many recordings numerical, published, gathered, classified, collected, often put in music (the famous Remix of Gerard ) and diffused on Internet by the community of its many listeners in metropolis but also in Belgium, French-speaking Switzerland and in the French-speaking Maghreb. On Thursday, April 20, 2006, was organized in Paris on Radio Campus an emission homage devoted to the debates of Gerard, gathering the usual ones and the major part of Dream Tise. For its part max, with the re-entry 2006, evoked finally Gerard in the " part; newspaper intime" of its official site, and put on line some sounds and vidéos before the closing of this last.
