Gerard de Lairesse

Gerard de Lairesse , born with Liege the September 11th 1640 and died in Amsterdam the July 28th 1711, is a painter, draftsman and engraver Dutch, also known for its writings on Article.

He studies the fine arts in Liege under the direction of his father, Renier Lairesse, and of Bertholet Flemalle. He decorates with rich person residences to Amsterdam and $the Hague. Its invoice is traditional and its subjects are monks or allegorical. He produces also engravings having for topic the wild animals. One of its most known works is Séléné and Endymion , representing the goddess of the Moon returning visit with Cupid with his/her lover plunged in the sleep eternal.

Become blind at 50 years, it composes the Large Book of the painters , translated into French in 1787, to make known the utility of painting, the beauties of art and its resources, and the method to arrive there.

Called in France “the Chick Dutch”, Gerard de Lairesse had as pupils Louis Fabricius Dubourg, Ottmar Elliger and Zacharias Webber.
