Gerard Violet

Gerard Violet , born in 1937, is an artistic director French promoter during more than 40 years of the Contemporary dance mainly to the Théâtre of the City of which he is the director since 1985.

Biography

Gerard Violette begins his career with the Théâtre of the City with Jean Mercure, since 1968, as general administrator before becoming the director of the institution in 1985, making it become the “Mecque” of the Contemporary dance in Europe. He will be the large craftsman of his expansion, in France and beyond, through in particular the promotion of the Nouvelle French dance and the Belgian contemporary choreographers. He will make in particular discover the work of Pina Bausch at the end of the years 1970, whereas she then was appreciated little in Germany. He will take an active part also in the development of the Festival of Fall in Paris in the years 1980, while making in others discover with the public of Paris Merce Cunningham, Lucinda Childs, Trisha Brown, Alwin Nikolais or Carolyn Carlson, but also of many French artists.

In June 2008, in agreement with the Town of Paris, it will leave the direction of the Théâtre of the City to its successor Emmanuel Demarcy-Mota.
