Gerard III of Gueldre

Gerard III of Gueldre , born towards 1185, dead the October 22nd 1229, was count de Gueldre and of Zutphen of 1207 with 1229. It was wire of Otton Ier, count de Gueldre and of Zutphen, and Richardis de Wittelsbach.

Its marriage made of him a brother-in-law of emperor Otton IV. During its reign, it increased the custom charges along the border with évêché of Utrecht and along the Rhine, which enabled him to grow rich. It however had litigations with its neighbors, the duke of the Brabant, archbishop of Cologne and the count de Hollande, in connection with these custom charges But it was held with the écard fight between Otton IV and Frederic II of Hohenstaufen.

It was buried in the cathedral of Ruremonde.

Marriages and children

He had married Marguerite in January 1206 of the Brabant (1192 † 1231), girl of Henri Ier, duke of the Brabant, and Matilde of Boulogne. They had:
  • Otton II (1215 † 1271), count de Gueldre and of Zutphen
  • Henri († 1285), bishop of Liege
  • Marguerite († v. 1251), married in 1237 with Guillaume IV († 1278), count de Juliers
  • Richardis († 1293/1298), married in 1260 with his/her brother-in-law Guillaume IV of Juliers
