Gerard Houllier

Gerard Houllier is a trainer French of Football, born the September 3rd 1947 with Thérouanne (Pas-de-Calais). It in particular involved Liverpool of 1998 to 2004 and the Olympique Lyonese of 2005 to 2007. It is currently national chief technical officer French football.

Biography

Player with statute amateur (59-68 in Hucqueliers, 68-69 in Liverpool Alsop, 69-71 in Hucqueliers, 71-76 in Touquet), Gerard Houllier is initially professor of English before embracing the career of trainer.

He directs the amateur team of Touquet, then the US Nœux-the-Mines, (2 {{E}} division) during 4 seasons before leaving into 82 to involve RC Lens (1 {{Re}} division) then the Paris Saint-Germain, where he takes down the first championship of France of the club, and this as of its first season. The continuation is more delicate and it is isolated at the conclusion of the season 1987-1988.

It joined then the French federation of Football, which is worth to him to be named at the end of 1988 assistant of Michel Platini, the national sport selector of the time. When Platini leaves the Blue ones after the failure of the Euro 1992, Houllier is named to succeed to him, in August 1992. But two surprised defeats in residence during the autumn 1993 (2-3 against Israel then 1-2 against the Bulgaria) bar in France the way of the Football world cup 1994. After this resounding failure, Houllier resigns of its functions of national sport selector, while remaining national chief technical officer, station which it already occupies since 1989.

As DTN, Gerard Houllier is in particular selector of the team of France of less than 18 years (of 1994 to 1996) then less than 20 years (of 1996 to 1998).

At the conclusion of the victory of Blue to the World cup 1998, Gerard Houllier leaves the DTN and leaves to involve the mythical club of Liverpool. With the head of the Reds , he does not know a great success in championship, but carries out one exceptional season 2001, by gaining the two national cuts (F Cup and League Cup), UEFA Cup, then Supercoupe d' Europe.

Victim of a serious mild heart attack on October 13rd, 2001 at the time of a match against Leeds United, Gerard Houllier must undergo an open-heart operation and put between brackets its functions to Liverpool. It carries out a triumphal return to Anfield later a few months, while the Reds complete their championship in convincing a second place.

But in spite of a new championship victory of the League in 2003, the history of love between Houllier and Liverpool start to end. Leaders and supporters reproach him more and more the irregular performances of the team, and at the conclusion of the season 2003-2004, its contract is not renewed.

After one year without club as a consultant with TPS Star, Houllier carries out his return in France to the summer 2005 as a trainer of the Olympique Lyonese with which it gains the Ligue 1 as of his first year.

During the between-season, he comments on the matches of the Football world cup 2006 with dimensions of Christian Jeanpierre, for TF1.

The following year, it gains once again the championship of France with the OL. On the other hand its team is eliminated as of the eighth from finale from the Ligue from the Champions.

May 25th, 2007, Houiller announces its departure of the Olympic Lyonese, whereas there remains to him one year of contract with the OL.

In September 2007 it is again named DTN with depends, in particular of Raymond Domenech. And this in spite of the different ones which opposed them when Houllier was trainer of the OL.
