Gerard Etienne
Gerard Etienne (born on May 28th, 1936 with Cape-Haitian with the Haiti) is a poet, writer, linguist and journalist who lives with Montreal, with the Quebec.
Biography
Gerard Vergniaud Etienne leaves at 15 years the paternal home. He protests thus against violence that his/her father subjects to his mother because this one does not share its beliefs voodoo. Gerard Etienne will remain terribly marked by this period of his life. He leaves for Port-au-Prince. Very quickly, it takes part in an insurrection against the despotic government of Paul E. Magloire. Stopped in company of Luc B. Innocent and of Windsor K. Laferrière, he is imprisoned and tortured first once. Disciple of the Haitian Marxist, the large novelist and doctor Jacques-Stephen Alexis, it takes part in a plot against the government of François Duvalier (" Doc'" dad;). He is stopped then tortured once again (he is then 23 years old). This turbulent life did not prevent it making traditional studies in Haiti, teaching in prestigious colleges and from starting a career of journalist.
Indeed, it writes at 13 years its first poems which it interprets with the radio. At the 16 years age, it completes a first book of Poésie. Then it publishes back-to-back In the middle of the tears (1960), Plus broad than a dream (1960), the reason and my love (1961), Essai on the négritude (1962) and nationalism in the Haitian literature (1963). It founds the cultural group Samba which was to become Haiti-arts person. Parallel to its life of writer, he teaches in colleges and with the college. He is at the same time critical arts person and to defer to the daily newspapers the Short story writer (1961-1962) and Panorama (1962-1964). Gerard Etienne also in parallel followed a trajectory artistic and military, particularly at the Company of the Messengers of art (1963) and with the Body of Aviation where, junior by the air, it is affected at the department of Météorologie (1955 - 1957). In August 1964, the writer is exiled with the Canada. Unloaded with Montreal, he teaches with the College Da Silva (1964-1965) and works like deferring to the daily newspaper Subway Express train and the newspaper Latin Quarter. During its studies in letters with the University of Montreal (1964 - 1970), he works in factory then as male nurse with the Hotel God of Montreal. He teaches with the College of Matane (1968-1970) and collaborates in the newspaper the Canadian Voice . He publishes in 1965 its first book in Canada, Lettres in Montreal .
He holds a baccalaureat are arts and an arts degree of the University of Montreal (1968), as well as a doctorate in linguistics of the University of Strasbourg (1974). In 1958, it undertakes simultaneously a career of journalist, professor and writer. With the publication of its first collection of poetry, it is found with the head of several cultural and literary movements in its country. Following a long detention in the prisons of Duvalier, it is exiled in Quebec in 1964. Since, it does not cease publishing poetries and accounts. Its work appears in several French and Haitian anthologies. These novels were translated into English, Portuguese and German.
He was editor association of the Lettres review and Writings of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Montreal of 1967 to 68 and of the review of the Université of Moncton of 1974 to 1980. He also collaborated in the daily newspaper the Morning and in the weekly magazines " Voilier" and the acadian Monitor . Since 1971, he is professor at the University of Moncton to the New Brunswick. He is also the founder of the Theater of Matane.
In 1979, it founds the module information/communication and sign from now on journalism. He collaborates in the newspaper " Devoir" of 1972 with 1987 and it is leader-writer with the daily newspaper the Morning (1986-1987).
In spite of two comas and an operation with the brain, it continues to write with the weekly magazine " Voilier" (1987 - 1989). In 1993, a few moments before he is the guest of the emission of Denise Bombardier " Passion" reason; , an physical aggression of a political nature makes him include/understand the extent of the combat that it remains to him to carry out against what it then calls the " feudal " Haitians (see " The Injustice, misinformation, contempt of the loi"). Since this date, Gerard Etienne collaborates in the newspaper Haiti-Observer and continues his fight for a durable democratic change in his country of origin.
Several of its titles were translated into foreign languages. The writer also followed a scientific career. He founded a new discipline in social sciences, the Anthroposémiologie. These two tests on the subject were greeted by the critic in Quebec and in the French-speaking world. Several other erudite studies in linguistics and semiology came to be added since to the work of Gerard Etienne (see lower list).
Gerard Etienne is member elect of several prices and distinctions.
Gerard Etienne was named personality of the year in Acadie (finalist category) in 1992. He received the Price of the best leader-writer (leading of the Sailing ship) in 1988 and the Price of the best Community radio broadcast in 1994. He also obtained in 1996 the certificate of honor Maurice Cagnon of the International counsel of French-speaking studies (CIEF) and the gold medal the French Rebirth in Montreal in 1997. He also holds the Cator trophy for the whole of his work. Directing member of the French Editions of Canada (1970), he will be founding member, reader and member of the board of directors of the Editions of Acadie. He is member of the Union of the écrivaines and the Québécois writers (UNEQ), and will work in particular in 2005 - 2006 for the committee " Language and souveraineté".
