Gerald Peter Kuiper , born under the name Gerrit Pieter Kuiper (December 7th 1905 - December 23rd 1973) was a Astronome Dutch and American. Born and formed with the Netherlands, it arrived at the the United States in 1933 and became American citizen in 1937.
He discovered 2 satellite S in the Solar system, Miranda, the moon of Uranus, and Néréide, the moon of Neptune. He also suggested the existence of a Ceinture of asteroids apart from the orbit of Neptune, called now the Ceinture of Kuiper which was confirmed thereafter.
In 1959 it accepted the Senior lectureship Henry Norris Russell of the American company of astronomy.
In the Years 1960, it helped the identification of the site of landing on the the Moon of the Programme Apollo.
Several craters, on the Moon, Mars and Mercury and a Astéroïde ((1776) Kuiper) were named on its behalf.
