Gerald Krefft

Johann Ludwig Gerald Krefft is a Naturaliste Australia N of origin German E, born the February 17th 1830 with Brunswick and dead the February 19th 1881 with Woolloomooloo, suburbs Sydney.

It tries initially its chance like businessman and emigrates with the the United States in 1851. He saw some time with New York as artist before leaving in July 1852 for the Australia, destination then strong appraisal by the gold diggers.

He works in a mine until in 1857 before settling with Melbourne. He is recruited by Sir Frederick McCoy (1817 or 1823-1899) for the station of assistant-conservative and of illustrator to the Australian Muséum of natural history of Sydney and in about it 1861 becomes the director.

But Krefft is constantly in conflict with the administration charged with the museums, and in particular with its president William John Macleay (1820-1891). Finally, Krefft is returned in 1874 but he refuses to leave his station and barricades himself in his office. One must carry it outside in his armchair and give up it on the pavement of the natural history museum.

Considering its illegal dismissal, Krefft continues the administration and ends up obtaining a strong compensation but not the authorization to reinstate its preceding functions.

It is interested on many subjects of natural history, Vertébré S with the Invertébré S like with the Paléontologie. It publishes a hundred scientific articles and several books of which The Snakes off Australia (1869) and The Mammals off Australia (1871) of which it pays pulling completely.
