Gerald Godin
Gerald Godin (November 13rd 1938 with Three-Rivers - October 12th 1994 with Montreal) is a writer and politician Québécois.
Biography
The poet Gerald Godin initially was journalist with the Short story writer (of 1958 to 1963). He was then established with Montreal where he was a long time recherchist in Radio-Canada. He also worked for the Maclean magazine of 1963 to 1969. He worked for Quebec-Press as director of the information from 69 to 73 then as temporary managing director as from 1973 until 1974. Godin was victim of the arbitrary arrests during the crisis of October 1970. He taught with UQAM as part-time lecturer, he left teaching in 1976 at the beginning of the strike of the teachers while becoming candidate of the Parti Québécois in the district Mercier.
He beats Robert Bourassa in Mercier with the election of 1976, he is starting from 1979 associates parliamentary of the Minister for the cultural affairs then of the Minister for justice before becoming Minister for immigration in 1980. Re-elected in April 1981, it is named Minister for the cultural communities and immigration and member of the council of the treasure. It was of 1982 with 1983 minister responsible for the application of the charter of the French language (Loi 101) of 1982 to 1983 before becoming deputy secretary with the linguistic businesses in 1984. Re-elected in 1985, it makes party of those which convinced Pierre-Marc Johnson to leave the party and Jacques Parizeau to return there.
Re-elected with the election of 1989, it is replaced as candidate in 1994, whereas it continued to fight against a cancer with the brain which came to end from him on October 12th this year. He was the husband of Pauline Julien.
Its Tango poem of Montreal was reproduced on a wall beside the Mount-Royal subway station.
The anthology of its poetic works, prepared by Andre Gervais, summer published in 2001 by the editions of the Hexagon under the title “They only asked to burn”. Its poetic work is characterized by a use of the popular language of Quebec. One finds there sometimes believed sacrings and several words which reflect very well the linguistic reality of people from here.
A CÉGEP of West-in-the Île of Montreal bears its name, the Cégep Gerald-Godin built at the end of the Années 1990. It is only the cégep French-speaking of this part of the Island of Montreal. Small cégep, it is recognized for its advanced technological and the relations teachers/pupils who are excellent. The literary prize of the Town of Three-Rivers bears its name: Price of literature Gerald-Godin.
