Gerónimo de Aguilar
Gerónimo de Aguilar (Seville, 1489 - 1531) is a brother Franciscain having taken part in the conquest of the Mexico at the sides of Hernan the Cortes.
In 1511, Aguilar started from Cuba on board the Santa María of Barca bound for the Central America. This boat made shipwreck close to the Péninsule of Yucatan because of the bad weather, but Aguilar and one of his/her companions, Gonzalo Guerrero, were among the 20 survivors.
Aguilar was taken along prisoner near a lord of the Amerindian tribe Ecab, the Halach Uinik, and intended to be sacrificed in the Maya honor of the dieus S. It learned the Maya language and succeeds in escaping.
When Hernan the Cortes invades the Mexico in 1519, Aguilar, which accompanied it, was able to translate in the languages Maya Aztèque and , just as Malinche, an Indian of the tribe Nahua.
Aguilar died in 1531.
