Gerónimo Giménez

Gerónimo Giménez there Bellido , born with Seville, on October 10th, 1854, and died in Madrid on February 19th, 1923, is a type-setter and Spanish leader.

It was primarily devoted to the composition of Zarzuela S, such as the tempranica and the boda of Shine Alonso .

He wrote his first name with a " G" , although he is written officially with a " J".

Biography

He learns the music with his father, then with Cadiz, with El Salvador Viniegra.

Child prodigy, it is with 12 years, first violin with the principal teatro of Cadiz. At 17 years, it directs a company of opera and zarzuela, beginning as director with Gibraltar with the opera Safo from Giovanni Pacini.

Stock-broker with the Conservatory of Paris, it studies there as from June 1874, the violin with Delphin Alard and the composition with Ambroise Thomas. He receives the first price of Harmonie and Contrepoint. He travels then to Italy and returns to Spain, while settling in Madrid. In 1885, it is named director of the Apolo Theater and little time after director of the Theater of Zarzuela.

Ruperto Chapí orders to him the opening of its zarzuelas El Milagro of Virgen and the bruja . It is then named with the head of the Sociedad de Conciertos of Madrid, which it directs during 12 years. To this station, it contributes to develop the taste of the inhabitants of Madrid for the philharmonic music. According to “those which saw it directing transmitted to us the memory of some executions of a great force and a great enthusiasm. Thanks to gestural unperceivable, it obtained what wanted orchestra”.

Prolific type-setter, it also collaborates with the best authors of Saynète S of the time: Ricardo of Vega, Carlos Arniches, Serafín, Joaquín Álvarez Quintero and Javier of Burgos. It creates some works with Amadeu Vives, which describes it as “musician of elegance”, for its rhythmic direction and its easy melodies.

In 1896, it writes El mundo comedia are or El bucket of Shine Alonso on a text of Javier of Burgos. Following the success of this creation, it puts in music another saynète same author with the same characters, who became one of his most famous works: Las bodas of Shine Alonso or noche LED encierro (1897). This second opus, who was a greater success than the first, is not a continuation but of a former event.

Tempranica is perhaps its most ambitious and succeeded work. Presented to the Theater of Zarzuela on September 19th, 1900, it is made up on the text of Julian Romea. Giménez manages to skilfully combine moments of an intense lyricism and others in which explodes the popular element, which in fact, according to the words of Gómez Amat “a zarzuela with all qualities of the kind and without any of its defects”. One often highlighted the influence of Giménez in the compositions of Manuel of Falla, Joaquín Turina and other Spanish type-setters posterior. The correspondences stylistics between certain moments of Tempranica and operated it of Handbook of Falla, Emptied It breve , seem obvious with any music lover. Federico Brun Torroba adapted it in opera, by putting in music the spoken parts. Joaquin Rodrigo composed in 1939 a homage to this zarzuela: Homenaje in Tempranica , with a soloist part of Castanet S.

At the end of its life, it is in the economic precariousness, worsened by the refusal of a post of professor of Chamber music by the Conservatoire of Madrid. He dies in poverty in Madrid on February 19th, 1923.
