Georges Récipon

Georges Récipon (Paris, January 17th 1860 - 1920) is a French sculptor. He begins with the Living room from 1879 of which he becomes member in 1888. He takes part in 1889,1890 and 1900 the World Fairs. In spite of its landscapes and its portraits, it is especially known as sculptor. He is in particular the author of the Nymphs of the Pont Alexandre III and the quadrigae of the roof of the Large palace.

Biography

Born in Paris on January 17th, 1860, he is the son of the goldsmith Paul-Edmond Récipon, with whom he collaborated in work, then entered to the school of the Art schools, where he was the pupil of Dumont and Thomas.

He obtained, in painting, the 1st price Jouvain d' Allainville (1882) and a price of decorative painting; in sculpture the first second Grand Prix of Rome, with the Return of the prodigal son (1889).

Mr. Georges Récipon sent to the successive Living rooms Société of the French artists, in the section of sculpture: Tyrtée , group plasters (1879); Pandora , statuette (1880); Mr. Mulot , bust bronzes (1881); Portrait of Miss C. Chassaing , bust plasters (1886); the Paddle , decorative high relief, and J.B. Pasdeloup , plaster (1888); the Toothing-stone and the Sword , allegory, statue plasters (1890); the same one out of bronze; the General Baston, count de Lariboisière , important statue plasters (1891); reproduced out of bronze, this last statue, later, was inaugurated in Fougères (Ille-et-Vilaine); Venus , statuette marble (1893); Mr. Danbé , bust plasters, and Horse packed , bronzes which belongs to Mr. Siot-Decauville (1894); My Young girls , plaster; Mr. Paul Monnet , of the French Comedy, bust plasters, and two medallions plasters (1897); Our friend , bust bronzes which belongs to Mr. Leblanc Barbedienne, and the Tombeau of Mrs. Lecomte , low-relief, set up with Auvers-sur-Oise (1898). One owes him moreover: a pediment for the hotel of Mrs. Dieulafoy; the Nymphs of the Seine and the Nymphs of Néva , two groups decorative for the Bridge Alexandre III; two great quadrigae of angle, out of hammered copper, for the Palate of the Art schools: Harmony dominating the Discord and it Immortality preceding Time ; the busts of Misters Bricard and Emile Go , Mrs. Umbetenstock and Cousin ; equestrian statues of Jeanne d' Arc , plaster; Marshal Ney , plaster; of Cambronne , bronzes; Duke of Own way , bronzes; of Napoleon 1st bronzes; of Napoleon child ; of Saint Louis and Holy Martin ; the bust of the Commander Coumès , for the monument raised with the Military academy of the Arrow and many objets d'art, among which: a Horseshoe , published by Knew; an allegorical vase: the Night , and a ceramic Flare published at Muller.

One quotes, like the best works of painting sent by Mr. Georges Récipon to the same Living room: the Edges of Juyné ; Rising sun (1881); the Mosquito net and To raise the moon in forest (1889); the June 21st, 1791, Drouet and Guillaume with the continuation of Louis XVI and his family (1893); Bay of Morlaix and castle of Bull seen of Carentec, Finistere (1891); the Fine of a prince at times mérovingiens (1890).

It still painted: portraits of Mrs. Albert and Gabriel Dehaynin , Mrs. Paul Hebert ; a large-sized panel, representing the Arts of Metal , for national Manufactures with the World Fair of 1900. It composed moreover one quantity of watercolours, the majority representing of the horse subjects and kind, published at Boussod and Valladon.

He collaborated in the illustrated Figaro , the illustrated Revue , the Revue Letters and Arts , with the Illustrated Monde , where its compositions were very noticed. He has magazine various works for editors Conquet, Hachette, Brochet, Launette, etc

The work of this artist, very considerable, in painting as in sculpture, was always favorably accommodated by the critic and the public. Mr. Arsène Alexandre, in the Barber , Mr. CH. Ponson-Lailly in the Illustrated World , and others, many, noted that Mr. Georges Récipon had at the same time the power, the grace and especially a beautiful gift of spontaneousness and exubérance, characteristic of sound very personal talent.

Mr. Georges Récipon obtained in sculpture the following rewards: honourable mention (Living room 1888), medal 3rd class (1890), mention (World Fair, 1889), money medal (World Fair, 1900). Put out of competition, it was made knight of the Légion of honor this last year. He is vice-president of the literary, artistic and scientic company “of the Ones”.
