Georges Perrot

Georges Perrot , born in 1832 and deceased in 1914, was a Archéologue, hellenist French of and 20th century.

Teaching with the Faculty of the Sorbonne as from 1875, it directs the National university of 1888 to 1902. Member of the Academy of the Inscriptions and Beautiful Letters as from 1874, of which it is named perpetual secretary of 1904 with his death. A medal and a price decreed by the academy bear its name.

In 1861, it carries out a scientific expedition and literary for the French ministry of the state education, in Greece and Asia Mineure associated with the architect Edmond Guillaume, and the doctor traveller Jules Delbet whose they publish the results in 1872. Several other missions will follow to Greece.

At the end of the 19th century, it accomplishes with the architect Charles Chipiez a great study trip of ancient architecture with the support of the publisher Hachette. This voyage will carry out them through the Greece, the Turkey, the Egypt, the Iran, and in other countries. They make there architectural studies on the majority of the ancient monuments based on the meticulous observation of the sculptures and the ruins. They publish in their return a great work in several volumes carrying out a synthesis on the history of ancient architecture, including/understanding many illustrations. The work is also translated into English. After the death of Bated, Georges Perrot continuously the drafting and publishes only two ultimate volumes (Volumes IX and X), the work remaining unfinished because of the death of the academician.
