Georges Mittelhus

Georges Mittelhus , is a printer of the 15th century born, according to any probability, with Mittelhausen in the noble family of the " von Mittelhausen". Since 1470, after having learned his trade at printers of Strasbourg, Georges Mittelhus is established with his expenses in Paris. In 1487, he lives street Jacques saint in the house of the clothiers of Hacqueville. At the beginning of his Parisian activities, Georges Mittelhus uses characters which point out the influence of Strasbourg and more particularly that of Johann Grüninger. But gradually, by supplementing its sets of characters, it takes model on the Parisian printers and, as from 1492, definitively adopts new reference letters which correspond better to the tastes of its customers. Its presses which function thus until 1503, around fifties will leave works, the majority theological and of moral construction. So their diffusion remained limited.

Its mark of printer shows in a sand field (black) framed, surmounted by a cross and a heart, monogram G.M. registered in this heart. In the lower part of the framework the first name and the name of the printer " appear; Georgius Mittelhus".
