Georges Marrane

Georges Marrane was a politician French, born the January 20th 1888 and deceased the August 27th 1976.

Biography

Mechanic then working clock and watch maker. He is wounded during the First World War. He adheres to the Socialist party SFIO in 1916. In December 1920, he decides for adhesion with the III International one. In 1922, it enters to the Political office of the French Communist party.

May 15th, 1925, he is elected mayor of Ivry-sur-Seine, then re-elected in 1929 and 1935. In 1936-37, it chairs the General advice of the the Seine. One month after the declaration of war, on October 4th, 1939, the communist city council men are suspended of their function. It is deposed of its mandate of mayor on January 21st, 1940 and enters clandestinity. One finds it with Lyon, with Toulouse, Marseilles, in Corrèze and High-Vienna where it deploys a considerable activity under the patronym of Gaston . Others called it Vercingétorix because of its superb moustache.

It accommodates de Gaulle with the Town hall of Paris on August 25th, 1944 in its capacity as vice-president of the Parisian Comité of Release. August 20th, 1944, Venice Gosnat, assistant of the mayor before the war, reconquers the town hall and sets up a Local committee of release. April 29th, 1945, Georges Marrane finds his armchair of mayor and directs the Town of Ivry until 1965.

He is however, in 1947, during his mandate, author of the discussed quotation: “the situation does nothing but worsen with the constant increase in their number (of the North-Africans). They are now 100.000 in the Seine, generally living in slums and not having any regular means of existence. It would be necessary to find a means of preventing them from coming to France, if they are not ensured to be able there to live normally. This myth of the equal rights leads to inextricable situations. ”

He is member of the provisional Consultative Assembly where he represents the Front National of the independence of France. Then he is elected with the Conseil of the Republic in 1946. Marrane is candidate with the presidency of the Council of the Republic and obtains like its rival Auguste Champetier de Ribes 129 votes. MRP is indicated for the benefit of the age.

Georges Marrane is Minister for the Public health and the population in the government Paul Ramadier from January 22nd to May 4th, 1947. He resigns following the ousting of the communist ministers members of the National Assembly.

He is member of the Senate until his election as a communist deputy of the the Seine in 1956. He is vice-president of the communist group of the National Assembly.

He is candidate of PCF to the presidential election of December 21st, 1958. He obtains to 10.355 votes (that is to say 13,1% of the votes) in the college of the Great Electors who indicates the Général de Gaulle like first president of V Republic.

He becomes again senator in 1959 and sits at the Palate of Luxembourg until 1968. He is also general adviser of 1946 to 1967.

Georges Marrane leaves the memory of a mayor and a concerned member of Parliament of the defense of the rights of the Working class.
