Georges Maniakès
Georges Maniakès (Γεώργιος Μανιάκης in Greek) is a Roman general of the 11th century. It is especially famous for its partial reconquest of the Sicily which began in 1038.
It was initially pointed out during a program in 1031, during which it took Edessa with the Seldjoukide S, as well as other territories of current the Syria.
It was assisted in its forwarding in Sicily by the guard varègue directed by Harald Hardråda, future king of Norway, like by 300 Norman mercenaries lent by the king Guaimar IV. Its forwarding failed in 1042, not without him and its troops not sowing death and the destruction on their passage. It put at the variation its admiral Stéphen and humiliated the chief of the quota lombard, Arduin. That was worth to him the desertion from Lombards as well as Norman present. He was then recalled to Constantinople by the Basileus Constantin IX in 1042.
He revolted against this one in 1042 and was proclaimed emperor by his troops and went towards the capital in 1043. He faced the troops of the emperor close to Thessalonique. Victorious at the beginning of the confrontation, it was seriously wounded and died shortly after. The rebellion ceased with its death.
