Georges Guétary
Georges Guétary (of his true name Lambros Worloou , born the February 8th 1915 with Alexandria - deceased the September 13rd 1997 with Mougins) Singer of Operetta and Greek actor naturalized French at the beginning of the Years 1950.
Biography
In 1934, the future Georges Guétary is sent in France to study the international business there. As he is the nephew of the traditional pianist Tasso Janopoulo, guide of the famous violonist Jacques Thibaud, he comes then into contact with the Parisian musical medium.
Jacques Thibaud advises to him to undertake a career of singer. He thus takes courses of song with the professional singer Ninon Vallin, and of the courses of harmony and piano. He also learns the comedy with the Cours Simon.
Nevertheless, it is in the Musique of varieties that it makes its beginnings, as singer in the orchestra of OJ Bubble. In 1937 it is noticed by Henri Varna, director of the Casino of Paris which entrusts to him a role of servant boy in the review of Mistinguett.
During the Second world war, without employment in the spectacle, it becomes Master of hotel in a Toulouse restaurant. It meets there the accordionist Fredo Gardoni who engages it as singer and allows him to record its first disc under the name of Georges Guétary, borrowed at a Basque city.
Its meeting with the type-setter Francis Lopez, who also begins him in the song, is decisive for the continuation of its career. Of Francis Lopez it creates Caballero and Robin of the Wood (1943), which obtains an immense success. With the Release, has Honolulu (1945), also of Francis Lopez, is on all the lips. Georges Guétary makes soon its first film, the black Rider (1945) whose songs are also of Francis Lopez ( Cavalier , With the love , most beautiful , and especially Chic in Chiquito , which gains an enormous success).
Georges Guétary is not satisfied a his success in France: he leaves to the conquest the American public. In 1950, it is devoted better singer of Opérette to Broadway for its interpretation in Arms and the girl . Georges Guétary is then at the top of his career. Of return in France, it holds the first role in two operettas of Francis Lopez, For Don Carlos (created with the Théâtre of Châtelet on December 17th, 1950) and the flowered Road (with the ABC, creation on December 19th, 1952) where it has as partners Bourvil and Annie Cordy. Without giving up the song, he interprets thereafter a series of operettas of various authors, with an unequal success: Pacifico (1958), the Hammer of the lampions (1962), Mr Carnaval (1965, on a music of Charles Aznavour), Mr Pompadour (1971) and finally Adventures of Tom Jones (1974), the latter not obtaining any success. In 1981, Francis Lopez turns again to Georges Guétary for a new operetta, Aventure in Monte Carlo , which obtains a honourable success. After these meeting again, it creates several operettas of Francis Lopez, but which do not have any more the glare of the sumptuous years 1950: Love in Tahiti (1983), Carnival in the Caribbean (1985) and the King of the Pacific (1986) like " Papa" hurrah; of OJ Moutet (1984).
Between 1944 and 1957, Georges Guétary turned in films, whose most known an American in Paris is (1951).
Among his films, one also retains the Adventures of Casanova of Jean Boyer, left in room in 1946.
Georges Guétary dies of a Heart attack on September 13rd 1997, in Mougins (the Alpes-Maritimes).
