Georges Grente

Georges François Xavier Marie Grente (Percy (Handle), May 5th 1872 - Mans, May 4th 1959) is a cardinal, historian and essay writer French.

Georges François Xavier Marie Grente studied the right, catholic theology and philosophy in Paris. It was ordered priest on June 29th, 1895 and worked then, during eight years, as professor with the small seminar of Mortain (Manche).

From 1903 to 1916 it directed the college diocesan of Saint-Lo; in 1914 it failed to become vice-chancellor of the catholic Université of Lille, but the war prevented it from occupying this station. From 1916 to 1918 it was Supérieur Saint-Paul Institute than Cherbourg.

The pope Benoît XV named it in 1918 bishop of the Mans. He was crowned by the cardinal Louis-Ernest Dubois. Large traveller (the United States, Central Europe) and author of many works (hagiographies, accounts of voyage, etc), he was elected with the French Academy on November 12th, 1936. The pope Pie XII named it in March 1943 archbishop ad personam and on January 12th, 1953 made it enter to the Crown-College. It took part in the Conclave of 1958 and died on May 5th, 1959 in Mans. It is buried in the cathedral.
