Georges Delerue

Georges Delerue , born the March 12th 1925 with Northern Roubaix France - died with Los Angeles California the March 20th 1992, is a type-setter and musical director of films. He was the author of the music of more than 300 films.

Biography

With the Conservatoire of Paris it continues its studies under the direction of Darius Milhaud and Jean Rivier. It starts to compose starting from 1947: its first String quartet in 1948, a Concertino for trumpet and its , string orchestra in 1951 Symphonia concertante in 1955,…

In 1949, it obtains the First Price of Composition as well as the Prime Minister Second Large Prix of Rome. In 1952, it is named type-setter and leader to the French Radiodiffusion. In 1957, it creates with the Opéra of Nancy, in collaboration with Jesus Etcheverry (musical direction) and Marcel Lamy (put in scene), a opera on a part of Boris Vian according to the Chevaliers of the Roundtable, the Knight of snow .

On the councils of Darius Milhaud, it starts to compose for the theater, Jean Vilar, then for the cinema, with Hiroshima my love in 1959.

He worked for the largest French directors, in particular those of “the New wave” ( the Contempt of Godard, films of Pierre Kast) and especially for François Truffaut, ( Jules and Jim , the Two English ones and continent , the American Night , the Last subway , etc).

He carries out also the music of popular successes of the French cinema, like films of Philippe de Broca ( Cartouche , the Man of Rio ,…), of Gerard Oury ( the Nitwit , the Brain ) or of Edouard Molinaro.

It also composes for television and the radio ( Jacquou crunching it , the cursed Kings of 1972, the code of Radioscopie of Jacques Chancel).

In the years 1970, it meets the favor of new realizers like Claude Miller, Yannick Bellon, or Alain Corneau. In 1972, it starts to work with Hollywood. It composed there inter alia the music of Platoon of Oliver Stone (1986). Martin Scorsese pays homage to him by taking again its music for the Contempt in its film Casino .
