Georges Catroux , born the January 29th 1877 with Limoges and dead on December 21st, 1969 with Paris, was a general, a Minister for the IV {{E}} République and an ambassador French. It was one of the principal generals rejoined with the Général de Gaulle after the Appel of June 18th and played a preeminent part in the action of the free France.

Biography

Georges Catroux is the son of an officer of career left the row (see low the chapter on its family). In cornice with the Military academy of the Arrow, it integrates Saint-Cyr military school in 1896 (promotion “Army maneuvers”).

A brilliant military career took it along in its youths of Algeria (where it became acquainted with the father of Foucauld, then of Lyautey), in Indo-China. In 1915, he is major when he is made prisoner by the Germans. In the prison camps, it will meet the captain De Gaulle.

After the Great War, it belongs to the French Military Mission in Arabia, then is used for Morocco, in Algeria and with Raising.

In July 1939, it is named general governor of the French Indo-China one month before the declaration of war (August 1939), where it succeeds a civil senior official: the day before the war, Paris wants to send a strong signal in the Far East. After the first treaties with the Japan in July 1940, following dissensions with the new government of Vichy, it is however constrained to leave its place to the admiral Decoux.

It then chooses to follow the general De Gaulle; general 5 stars, it was highest graded French Army to join with him. De Gaulle appoints it Haut-Commissaire with Raising in 1941, it is him which, in the name of free France, recognizes the independence of Syria shortly after its nomination. He is then general governor of the Algérie (1943 - 1944), always named by the general De Gaulle (see Liste of the French Ministers for the Algerian Businesses).

Companion of the Release, he is Minister of North Africa in the first government of Charles de Gaulle from September 9th, 1944 to October 21st, 1945, becomes Ambassadeur in Soviet Union of 1945 with 1948.

After the disorders of the Morocco, it is him which negotiates the return of the sultan Mohammed V in 1955.

Minister-resident in Algeria of the Government Guy Mollet in 1956, it could not take its functions in reasons of the nationalist demonstrations of the February 6th to Algiers.

He is judge of the High military Tribunal having judged the generals putschists of Algiers of 1961.

Family

Georges Catroux is the son of Rene-Michel Catroux (1835 - 1920), an officer of career left the row having been useful under Napoleon III in the Far East and Algeria, born with Rablay in the Maine-et-Loire which married in 1871 Félicité Solari (1852 - 1935), born with Genoa and girl from colonist on the Algerian territory.

Georges Catroux is the third of four children, all the boys. His/her older brother, Charles, born in 1872 (or 1873?), with a military career but young man dies is promised. The second brother, Rene (1874 - 1964) is known as international expert in tables, his father will be annoyed with him not to have chosen a life in the French Army. The last brother is Alexandre (1881 - 1959).

Among the three nephews whom his Rene brother will give him, let us note Tristan Catroux, expert in tables him also and Diomède Catroux, politician, deputy of the Maine-et-Loire then of the Alpes-Maritimes and Secretary of State to the air then with the armament in the years 1950 and 1960.

Georges Catroux knew three marriages. In 1902, it Marie first once with Marie Pérez who gives him two wire. This marriage will not be accepted by his/her authoritative father, who will not assist to with it. In 1932, after the death of its first wife, it Marie with Marguerite Jacob, countess of Humières, which will die in 1959. In 1962, the last wife is Frances Dellschaft, marchioness of Dalmatie.

Enough exceptional fact to be noted, its funerals in the church Saint-Louis-of-Invalids on December 24th, 1969 were retransmises on line on one of the two only French television channels of the time.
