Yeóryos Kandýlis (in Greek: Γεώργιος Κανδύλης , Bakou, March 29th 1913 - Paris, May 10th 1995), known abroad under the name of Georges Candilis , is a Architecte and Greek Urbaniste .

Biography

He carries out studies of Architecture at the polytechnic school of Athens of 1931 to 1936. He meets Le Corbusier during his studies, whereas he attends the fourth CIAM which is held in Athens in 1933. In 1943, Le Corbusier entrusts the direction of the ASCORAL to him (Parliament of Manufacturers for an Architectural Restoration). Candilis settles in France in 1945 and joined there the workshop of Le Corbusier, becoming one of her principal collaborators. He endorses in particular the responsibility for the programming of the building site of the Housing unit of Marseilles until 1952.

Candilis goes to Tangier to the beginning of the year 1950, where it joined the African antenna of ATBAT (Workshop of the Builders) rested by Le Corbusier, Vladimir Bodiansky, André Wogenscky and Marcel Py in 1947 within the framework of the construction of the Housing unit of Marseilles. Shadrach Woods, the engineer Henri Piot and Candilis direct this structure, conceived halfway between research center and interdisciplinary work place where architects, engineers and technicians collaborate. Because of the local political climate then tended, the workshop tangerois is closed in 1952, which leads Candilis and Woods to become the directors of the seat located at Casablanca until 1954, moment of the final adoption of the African activities of the ATBAT.

Founding member of the collective TEAM 10 in 1953, Candilis brings like principal contribution his idea of " the habitat of largest the nombre". This idea came to him from Michel Ecochard, with whom Woods and Candilis presented in 1953 their Moroccan work at the time of the ninth CIAM. This work, as those carried out within the framework of the projects of the ATBAT, were followed with attention and received criticisms eulogistic. Towards the end of the year 1950, Candilis already develops with Woods the idea of an evolutionary habitat, integrating the problems of the growth and the change on the scale of the house. Within the TEAM 10 , Candilis constitutes a bond of continuity between the CIAM, where it was invested of long time, and Le Corbusier, from the privileged relation which they maintain.

After the end of the ATBAT, Candilis and Woods settle in 1954 with Paris, where they create their own agency, in partnership with the Yugoslav architect Alexis Josic. They also join to engineers Paul Dony and Henri Piot. The agency, hardly opened, gains the contest “Operation Million”, whose objective is to reduce two thirds the cost of construction of an apartment three parts, by reducing it in frank lower parts of the million from . Until 1964, the Candilis-Josic-Woods agency works on tens of thousands of residences, in Metropolitan France as in DOM-TOM. Inter alia remarkable achievements, one can quote the extension of Bagnols-sur-Cèze between 1956 and 1961 or the design of the district of the Mirail with Toulouse of 1961 to 1971. Within the team, Candilis has as a role the official representation of the agency and the negotiation, while being constantly in contact on a side with the contractors and other with the policies.

In 1965, it opens a workshop external with the 3Ecole Nationale Sup3erieure of the fine arts of Paris at the request of its students. It continues to teach after the events of May 1968, with the Teaching Unit NR 6. It also ensures, in a specific way, the interventions in other schools in France and abroad where it is invited.

When CIAM cease to exist, Candilis continues to organize certain meetings of the TEAM 10 : those of Bagnols-sur-Cèze in 1960 and Toulouse in 1971. The last meeting of the collective, abstract, is held in 1977 with Bonnieux, in its own house of holidays.

In 1969, the partnership with Josic and Woods is broken. Candilis then continues only its activity as an architect and a town planner. He works on the installation of tourist sites (of which Port-Barcarès), like on several projects of residences and schools to the the Middle East. He is called in addition in Greece after the fall of the colonels in 1974 for councils in projects of installation and town planning.
