George Smathers
George Armistead Smathers (1913-2007) was an American politician. And member man of law of the democratic party, it was senator of Florida of 1951 with 1969. He begins his political career like representative of 1947 to 1951. In 1950, it receives the support of Harry Truman to beat senator of Florida the leaving and democratic, Claude Pepper, which had been opposed to the presidential candidate of Truman in 1948. Smathers signed in 1956 the Southern Manifesto, text written by many elected officials of the south of the United States (Deep South), against a decision of the Supreme court going against the segregation in the public schools. It was presented without democratic successes to the primary education at the time of the presidential elections of 1960, before supporting the countryside of John Kennedy in South-east. In 1968, it decides to be withdrawn from the policy. Smathers was famous being as much friendly with Kennedy than with Richard Nixon.
