George Schoener
George Schoener , or Georg Schöner (March 21st 1864 - October 2nd 1941) is a catholic Prêtre of German origin which was known with the the United States like the “ Padre off the Roses ” because of its experiments in the field of the selection and the hybridization of the Rosier S, in particular via wild species. Only two of its creations remain still today: “Arrilaga” and “Schoener' S Nutkana”.
It was born in a family from peasants from Steinach (Bade-Wurtemberg, Germany). It makes its studies with Engelberg and Einsiedeln of 1883 to 1889. One of his/her aunts enables him to emigrate in America, where it is ordered priest with Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania). Afflicted by diseases, it fails Brooks (Oregon) in 1911, and there, it is captivated by the activity of rosiculture in the city close to Portland. It puts at research in the hills surroundings of wild specimens of species, such as Rosa nutkana .
In 1915, a fire destroys the church and the house and in 1917 it leaves for Santa Barbara in California.
In 1939, it is affected with the university of Santa Clara, but it dies hardly two years later.
A school of Steinach, the Georg-Schöner-Schule , bears its name.
