George Parker Bidder
George Parker Bidder is a zoologist and a marine biologist British, born the May 21st 1863 with London and dead the December 31st 1953.
After studies with Brighton, it spends one year to the University College of London. On the councils of Francis Maitland Balfour (1851-1882), it attends the conferences of Sir Edwin Ray Lankester (1847-1929), the founder of the Association of marine biology.
Bidder leaves then as stock-broker in Mathématique S and sciences to the Trinity College where it obtains a Bachelor off Arts with mention ( tripos ) in Natural science in 1884 and in 1886. It follows there the courses of Walter Frank Raphael Weldon (1860-1906) and of Sir Sidney Frederic Harmer (1862-1950). It consequently starts to be interested in the Biologie marinades, seems it following the reading of Twenty thousand miles under the seas of Jules Verne (1828-1905). After obtaining its diploma it remains with the zoological Station of Naples of 1887 with 1891 and in 1893, the three last years with the invitation of Anton Dohrn (1840-1909). It leads experiments on sponges.
Bidder makes its first visit at the laboratories of Plymouth in 1890. Of 1893 with 1895, it there continues its research on sponges and becomes acquainted with Edgar Johnson Al (1866-1942). This one becomes the direction of the station of Plymouth in 1894 and attempts to make appear a study on the farm of sponge culture of Florida and on the artificial culture of sponges (with the objective to introduce the culture of it into the Bahamas). As, it is naturally in Bidder as it appeals to assist it.
Bidder must stop its visits with Plymouth in 1896 with died of his/her father because it must deal with the family companies (in particular Houillère S and a mine of Plomb). It Marie in 1899 with Marion Greenwood, physiologist of formation. They settles in Cambridge in 1902. One year later, Bidder starts to show its signs of the Tuberculose. It continues its scientific activities and starts to be interested in geology of the coasts of Norfolk and erosion. It contributes actively to the Marine Biological Association and proposes to provide a boat to carry out maritime research which will be baptized the Huxley , of the name of the first president of Association. The ship is affected with biological research in the North Sea.
Made Bidder of many actions in favors of research in Great Britain: it contributes to the rescue of the reviews Quaterly Journal off Microscopical Science and Journal off Experimental Biology . Bidder convinces also the Royal Society to carry assistance to the zoological station of Naples after the Second world war.
