George P. Burdell
George P. Burdell is a student fiction registered officially with the Georgia Institute off Technology in 1927 like hoax. Since then, one decreed several diplomas to him, it made his military service, married, was used for the board of directors of the famous magazine Mad , and took part in many of other events. At a given time it was even at the head survey of the Personnalité of the year according to Time Magazine in 2001. It became an important tradition of the university; all the new students of Georgia Tech learn the history from Burdell during their introduction to the campus.
History
Origins
It is William Edgar Smith, known as ED (Baccalauréat in sciences, 1930), which is credited with creation with Burdell. Receiving two registration forms with Georgia Tech, Smith had the idea to fill both quite simply to have fun. The origins of the name of George Burdell are rather vague; Smith said that he wanted in the beginning to register the director of his college, George P. Butler, but changed idea and thus family name.
After having registered it at the university, Smith registers Burdell with all the courses which it took itself. He made his duties and projects in double, changing them a little to prevent that the professors do not realize of its joke. When it had an examination it took two sheets and did it in double, signing a sheet with the name of Burdell. In 1930 Burdell had its Baccalauréat in sciences.
One of the first hoaxes made under the pseudonym of Burdell occurred shortly after. A student, angry not to be accepted with a Fraternity (circle of students), order, under the name of Burdell and with Against-refunding, enough of pieces of furniture to fill a truck with delivery and request to make them deliver to the fraternity in question.
The second world war
Burdell made its military service on many faces during the Second world war; its name appeared everywhere in the world. It is mentioned on the list of the team of a B-17 Flying Fortress, fascinating share with twelve missions above the Europe with the 8th USAAF in England. When a graduate of Georgia Tech becomes officer of this plane, he immediately recognizes the name of Burdell and this one fly never. Post-war period
Burdell is on the list of the members of the team of Basket-ball in 1956, 1957 and 1958. In 1969 Georgia Tech digitizes its system of inscription to the courses and lists of students, thinking that they had succeeded in preventing that the Burdell hoax does not start again. Hacker S nevertheless register it at the university this year, and with all the possible courses, that is to say: 3000 hours of course. In 2001 it was at the head survey of the Personnalité of the year according to Time Magazine, collecting at least 57% of the votes, until the magazine removes its name of the list of the candidates. It also has many credit cards to its name, and is subscribed with many magazines.More recently, Burdell took part in the music and the policy. It is Bariton in the album 1995 Jesus Christ Superstar: With Resurrection , made with Atlanta by much of musicians of the area. He is member of the chorus of the album There Has Place , left in 2006. In 2000 he is the alternate delegate with democratic Convention national for the Georgia. It is also on the list of the members of the faculty of Georgia Perimeter College; its wire , George P. Burdell Junior, is a supervisor of several courses each year.

Burdell is a symbol of the university and is very respected students. One says to the new students that Burdell is one of the most famous alumni of Georgia Tech. Burdell is often made call by the first-year students taking part in the brass band of the school at the time of the matches of American football held except Georgia Tech, in the Aéroport S, the Bar S and the Hôtel S. the students of Georgia Tech often use the name of Burdell as Alias when they do not want to reveal their true name.
