George Monck

George Monck known as Monck (December 6th 1608 - January 3rd 1670), 1st Duke of Albemarle (Aumale), General of the sea (admiral) (1652).

Second wire of Sir Thomas Monck, a man of good family, it was born in Potheridge, close to Torrington, in the Devonshire.

Military career

In spring 1649, at the time of the Third civil war English in Ulster, the lack of resources to fight forces it to negotiate a Armistice with Owen Roe O' Neill. The the Commonwealth of England exonerates it finally whole blames disloyalty.

In 1650, Cromwell gives him the command of a regiment to foot of the New Model Army . This confidence proves justified by the partners in Scotland de Monck. This one belonged to the Conseil of war for the battles of Dunbar and, in May 1651, is promoted lieutenant-general of the artillery (ordnance).

In December 1652, its health obliges it to return to England, but it joint with the navy and takes part in the First war anglo-Dutchwoman.

In 1654, royalist rising of Glencairn the fact of returning to Scotland where it removes it. It purges also the rows of its regiments of the Niveleurs, Quakers, Fifth Monarchist S and other extremists.

After-Cromwell

In 1659, after the death of Cromwell, it supports and advises its successor Richard Cromwell. On the other hand, it does not do anything either when Charles Fleetwood and John Disbrowe reverses it, when John Lambert restores the Parlement tail.

In November 1659, Lambert is sent with strong troops to go to the meeting of Monck, which was with the command of the English forces in Scotland. Lambert was to negotiate with him or to force it to subject to the will Parliament. With the support of Thomas Fairfax, Monck manages however to take the direction of the south. The army of Lambert disaggregates vis-a-vis the pressures of Monck and that one almost only returns to London, the majority of its soldiers having deserted. Monk thus goes on London without any opposition.

In May 1660, it recommends to the Long Parliament to invite the king and it is the first to accommodate it on its arrival, on May 25th, with Dover.

English restoration

Its regiment is only New Model Army with being built-in the troops of Charles II of England to the English Restauration, under the name of the Coldstream Guards .

His/her son Christopher Monck succeeds to him like 2 Duc of Albemarle in 1670.
