George McCall Theal
George McCall Theal (April 11th 1837 with Midsummer's Day, New Brunswick - April 17th 1919, Wynberg, South Africa) was a Journaliste, a Généalogiste and a Historien of origin Britannique.
Influenced by the social Darwinism, Theal exaltait the Colonialisme like the triumph of progress on the less advanced races. It is one of the first historians to have examined South Africa like a Nation and not like a heterogeneous whole of distinct colony S.
Biography
Theal was born with the Canada but very quickly it starts to traverse the world. He saw some time with the the United States then in Sierra Leone before emigrating in South Africa in the Colonie of the Cape.Autodidact, it carries out various trades as teacher, journalist, editor and finally prospector of Diamant S.
He passes to 5 years of his life in theological missions of the Eastern border of the colony of the Cape then sign to Knysna and King William' S Town. He also directs 3 reviews of the British Cafrerie of 1862 to 1865.
In 1871, it publishes South Africa As It Is .
Its career of historian begins in 1873 when it publishes a thesis of history and geography of South Africa after being formed with the mission of Lovedale, in Histoire, Géographie, in English grammar and religious teaching.
In 1877, it joined the colonial administration of the Cape as an attache to the indigenous service then responsible for the files of the colony.
In 1891, he becomes official historian of the colony of the Cape.
In 1895, Cecil Rhodos, the Prime Minister for the Cape, sends it in Europe to study the organization of the Portuguese files in Lisbon, the files Dutchwomen in $the Hague and the files British in London.
It also writes a monumental encyclopedic history of South Africa.
During the War of Boers, it takes part for the latter and publishes a history of South Africa supporting the identity movement afrikaner by centering its account on the Grand Trek and the Serment of allegiance to God.
Theal dies in 1919 whereas it carried out the last corrections on the last two volumes of its historical encyclopedia. Its passion for research led it to find and save many documents of high value concerning the history of the inhabitants of South Africa.
