George Engelmann

George Engelmann is a Médecin and Botaniste of German origin , born with Francfort-sur-le-Main the February 2nd 1809, emigrated with the the United States in 1832, deceased with Saint-Louis the February 11th 1884. It is in this last city that was held most of its professional path.

Its research on biology and botany led it to operate meteorological observations since 1836 until its death. It is the first to have noticed that the American vines were immunized against the Phylloxéra. He lengthily studied the local flora, being interested in particular in the cactus, the Chêne S and the coniferous .

Its name was given to a species spruce, Picea engelmannii (virginal of Engelmann).
