Voyage in the center of the Earth is a novel of Science-fiction, written in 1864 by Jules Verne.

Having discovered an old manuscript runic, a scientist, his nephew and their guide undertake a voyage towards the center of the Ground while entering there by a Volcan Icelandic extinguished.

As with the practice of Jules Verne, the novel is a skilful mixture of scientific data, the extrapolations dared and of adventure. The introduction of the novel reflects the passion of then for a young science, the Cryptologie (Edgar Poe will also sacrifice to it in the news the gold beetle). The continuation connects on a description of Iceland of the end of 19th, then on a vast introduction to two other sciences in full rise, the Paléontologie and the Géologie besides (one will note the divergences between usually allowed interpretations of the time and those today).

The screen of the novel

The narrator is Axel Lidenbrock, nephew of eminent a Géologue and German Naturaliste, the professor of Minéralogie Otto Lidenbrock. The history starts with Hamburg, in the house of the pr. Lidenbrock. The professor, amateur of old books, bought the original manuscript of a Icelandic saga, Heimskringla, written by Snorri Sturluson at the 12th century. He discovers there a coded parchment, written in characters runic.

Axel and its uncle impassion themselves for this Cryptogramme, which they end by deciphering and identifying. It is about a message of certain Arne Saknussemm, a alchemist of the 16th century. This one affirms to have discovered a passage towards the center of the Earth, via the volcano Sneffels in Iceland.

Professor Otto Lidenbrock is an enthusiastic and impetuous man. He decides to leave as of the following day for the Iceland, taking along with him his nephew Axel, much more reticent. With Reykjavík, they engage a hunter of Eider named Hans Bjelke, who will be their guide. The three men travel to the foot of the Sneffels volcano, and make the rise of it. The extinct crater contains three chimneys. One of them must be effleurée by the shade of a high peak, Scartaris, at midday, “before the calends of July”, i.e. in the last days of June. According to the note of Saknussemm, there the passage is towards the center of the Earth…
