George Chauncey
George Chauncey is a American Historien born in 1954.
Professor of history in Yale (after having taught a long time with the University of Chicago), it is one of the most famous figures of the Gay and Lesbian Studies . He is in particular the author of Gay New York: Gender, Urban Culture, and the Making off the Gay World Male, 1890-1940 (BASIC Books, 1995), published in France ten years later: Gay New York, 1890-1940 (Beech, 2003; translated by Didier Eribon).
In this work, Chauncey describes well the genesis of the division which prevails today between heterosexuals and homosexual, as well as the existence of a gay world in the town of New York before famous the riots of Stonewall. He works from now on with the drafting of a new book, which will continue this history until beginning of the Années 1970.
