Biography

In its youth George Adams is initiated by her brother with the Rhythm and blues but also with the Bebop. It accompanies with the piano the choral society by her church. He learns then the saxophone.

He begins his professional path while accompanying by the bluesmen (Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter, Elmore James, Lightnin' Hopkins). In 1961, he is member of the orchestra of Sam Cooke. At the same time, he learns the flute with Wayman Carver, one of the pioneer of the instrument in jazz.

As from 1963, it settles in the Ohio where it plays in “organ combo S”, a music between jazz and rhythm and blues, where its style expressionist and its talents of “saxophonist hurlor” make wonder. He is besides also sometimes singer in the greatest tradition of the “Blues shouters”.

In 1969, it settles with New York where, musician “free lance”, it plays in various groups of jazz (Roy Haynes, Art Blakey…). In 1973, Charlie Mingus, allured by the mixture of tradition and modernity which characterizes the style of the Saxophoniste, engages it. George Adams remains in the orchestra of the double bass player until 1976.

As from 1976, Adams directs a series of small formations (sometimes Co-directed by Don Pullen). One can also hear it playing under the direction of others jazzmen: McCoy Tyner, Gil Evans, Hannibal Marvin Peterson… It practices also a kind of “free blues” with the guitarist and singer James Blood Ulmer in the group “Phalanx”. Lastly, one often finds it in orchestras perpetuating the music of Mingus: groups “Orange the Blues” (alias “Mingus Epitaph”) directed by Gunther Schuller and “Mingus Dinasty”

He dies in 1992, at the time of an surgical operation.
