Georg Wilhelm Pabst

Georg Wilhelm Pabst is a realizer, scenario writer, producer and German assembler of Austrian origin born the August 25th 1885 with Raudnitz (Bohemian, Austria-Hungary, today Czech Republic), deceased the May 29th 1967 with Vienna (Austria).

Biography

It is born in an Austrian family from Bohemia, where his/her father is railroad worker. He is initially actor for the theater, in Switzerland, then in Berlin. He remains in the United States, then returns to Europe, in particular to France where he is interned during the Great War until 1919.

Of return in Germany, it founds, with Carl Froelich a production company, in which it begins like realizer in 1923. Its great successes at the time of the dumb man are the Street without joy (1925), with Greta Garbo, the Mysteries of a heart (1926), the Love of Jeanne Ney (1927) and Loulou (1929), (with Louise Brooks), of deeply realistic films influenced by the psychoanalysis (then little known out of Germany) and which tackles with frankness the problems from sexuality.

At the beginning of speaking, it carries out two exhortations with the Franco-German friendship: Four of the infantry (1930) and the Tragedy of the mine (1931), framing celebrates it Opéra of quat' under according to Bertold Brecht, with a music of Kurt Weill.

After the come to power of the Nazis, it spends a time abroad, turning to the United States and to France, before returning to Germany, where it continues its work of scenario writer all while being put up with the new mode.

After the War, he endeavors to exorcize the demons of the Nazism, with in particular the Lawsuit (1948) and the End of Hitler (1955).

He ceases turning in 1956 and dies, almost forgotten, on May 29th 1967 in Vienna (Austria).

  • 1963: Reward honorary in German Films Awards for its individual contribution to the Germanic cinema.

Nominations

Anecdotes

  • It was particularly appreciated of its actors that it treated in a very human way, in opposition to other realizers of the time.
  • In 1935, it planned to make a film inspired of the opera Faust bringing together the two actresses whom it had revealed, Greta Garbo (in the role of Gretchen) and Louise Brooks (in that of Helen of Troy), but the project was not born.
