Georg Pencz

Georg Pencz (also Jörg Pencz ), (° Nuremberg, 1500/02 - † Leipzig October 11th, 1550) is a painter, draftsman and German engraver.

Biography

In 1523, it joined the workshop of Albrecht Dürer. Like Lasting, he visits Italy where he is deeply influenced by Venetian art; he is extremely probable which he worked with Marcantonio Raimondi.

In 1525, with the brothers Barthel Beham and Hans Sebald Beham, they are called the " painters impies" and are banished Church Lutheran of Nuremberg because of their religious convictions; indeed, they spread the ideas of Thomas Müntzer by affirming incredulity in the baptism, Christ and the Transsubstantiation. Forgiven a little later the three belong to the group Kleinmeister , the minor artists , because of the small size of engravings which they produce in order to be sold at piece-rates.

In 1539, Pencz turns over to Italy, for a short stay, visiting Rome for the first time, then it returns to Nuremberg in 1540.

It was appointed painter of this city and obtained a great success as portraitist.

In 1550, it is named painter of court by Albert de Brandebourg, duke of Prussia, but it dies before joining its station.
