Forest spaces

Regional wooded surface (forest, wood, thicket and poplar plantation) is of 117500 ha is 9% of the territory: it is the lowest rate of France. It is primarily made up of leafy trees (oak, ash, beech and other invaluable gasolines). Over the 15 last years (period 1988-2003), forest surface nevertheless increased by 16%, the strongest rate of afforestation of France, the national average being of 4%. Compared to 1907, regional wooded surface increased by 30% (45% in Pas-de-Calais).

Occupation of space

Area of low altitude, the North-Not of Calais can however be divided into two parts.

Courses (Cape Gray-Nose and Cape Blanc-Nez) with the Avesnois, while passing by the hills of Artois and Thiérache, a great western and southern part, which represents nearly 60% of the surface of the territory, offers landscapes undulating and of the woodlands. The human density is close to the French national average there.

The north-eastern part of the area, on the other hand, belongs to the large north-European plain which extends until the the Ural. The reliefs (Mount Cassel, Mount of Cats…) there weak and are dispersed. In this large plain, which accounts for about 40% of the regional surface, the three-quarters of the population and the essence of the industrial activity concentrate. The human activity is favoured there not only by the weak relief but also by an intense grid of grid systems: rivers and channels with large gauges, highways (A1, A16, A23, A25, A26), railways at high speed, airport of Lesquin.

List tops

The Mounts of Baives (40 hectares) are located at the south-eastern end of the Regional natural park of Avesnois. Of an altitude close to 220 meters, formed on an old old coral solid mass of more than 370 million years, this site is consisted of the last calcicoles lawns of the department of North.

  • 1979 on May 17th with Arch (Pas-de-Calais) magnitude of 4°5
  • the 2007 on April 28th with 8hr18 in Manche between Folkestone and the Cape Gray-Nose a Earth tremor of 4°3 on the scale of Richter was recorded. The epicentre is located at sea at 14 km at the south of Dover and 7.1 km of depth. The rail traffic transmanche was not affected
